Fairfax County Traffic Violations Defense Attorney
Some traffic convictions can land you in jail. Other offenses can take away your driver’s license. Every traffic ticket adds points to your driving record. I am Jonathan Y. Short, a traffic violations defense lawyer with more than 25 years of legal experience. If you are facing serious criminal charges or fear that your license will be suspended, I am ready to help protect your rights with a vigorous defense.
Dedicated Defense Against All Traffic Offenses
As a Virginia criminal defense lawyer, I have extensive experience defending against all types of traffic offenses, including:
- Driving while intoxicated (DWI)
- Reckless driving — more than 80 mph or more than 20 mph over the speed limit
- Driving while a license is suspended or driving without a license
- Speeding tickets
- Running a stoplight or stop sign
- Failure to yield or illegal passing
Even if your charge does not result in a jail sentence, you can still lose your license for an extended period. If you are deemed to be a habitual traffic offender (three major violations or 12 minor offenses within 10 years), your license can be revoked indefinitely.
Do Not Pay the Fine and Do Not Go to Court Alone
Every traffic conviction results in demerits, or points, against your license. If you accumulate too many points, you must attend a Driver Improvement Clinic (DIC). If you collect 18 points in 12 months or 24 points in 24 months, your license will be suspended for 90 days. You will also have to complete DIC before you get your license back and will be on probation for six months. The penalties are even stiffer for drivers under the age of 18.
With so much at risk, you should seek advice at my Alexandria criminal law office. My goal is to get traffic offenses dismissed, not merely reduced. For out-of-state drivers, I try to get the charges dismissed or reduced without the driver having to make a court appearance.
