Traffic Violations

How Serious Is Your Traffic Offense?

Protecting Your Freedom and Your Driver's License

Some traffic violations can land you in jail. Other offenses can take away your driver's license. Every traffic ticket adds points on your record.

If you are facing serious criminal charges or fear that your license will be suspended, call the law firm of Jonathan Y. Short, P.C., in Arlington. In an initial consultation, I will tell you if you need legal representation. I take cases throughout northern Virginia.

Major Traffic Violations

These traffic crimes can result in jail:

  • Reckless driving — More than 80 mph or more than 20 mph over the speeding limit
  • Hit and run (leaving the scene of an accident)
  • Racing
  • Driving while suspended or driving without a license
  • Driving while intoxicated (DWI)

Even if you avoid a jail sentence, you can lose your license for an extended period. If you are deemed a Habitual Traffic Offender (three major violations or 12 minor offenses within 10 years), your license can be revoked indefinitely.

Other Traffic Violations

If you accumulate too many demerits (points) against your license, you must attend a Driver Improvement Clinic (DIC). If you collect 18 points in 12 months or 24 points in 24 months, your license will be suspended for 90 days by the Virginia DMV. You will also have to complete DIC before you get your license back, and you will be on probation for 6 months. The penalties are even stiffer for drivers under 18.

I have fought all traffic offenses:

  • Speeding tickets (10 to 19 mph over the limit)
  • Running a stoplight/stop sign
  • Failure to yield or illegal passing
  • Failure to stop for a school bus
  • Tinted windows and other infractions

Don't Pay the Ticket • Don't Go Into Court Alone

Contact me first. My goal is to get traffic violations dismissed, not merely reduced. I am a traffic and criminal defense trial lawyer with 20 years of experience in courts of Arlington County, the city of Alexandria and Fairfax, Prince William and Loudoun counties. I represent many out-of-state drivers from Washington, D.C., Maryland or elsewhere tagged for traffic offenses in Virginia.

Call me day or night at 1.866.403.4589 or contact me online to find out where you stand. I offer a free initial consultation, and I accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express.
